Pumpkin Island is a small tropical island located 14 km off the coast of Yeppoon. This island is relatively unknown but has much to offer for those wanting a relaxing island escape in the Great Barrier Reef.
About Pumpkin Island

Australians may recognise this island as XXXX Island, however, this secret gem has been revamped and is now open to the public to enjoy. The island can cater to families, couples, groups, weddings or for a maximum of 36 guests.

This island gives you the chance to escape from a busy lifestyle and to slow down and enjoy nature with all your creature comforts. The island has five self-catering eco friendly cottages and two beach bungalows, which are powered by the wind and solar energy. All cottages have kitchen facilities including fridges, ovens and a weber BBQ on the deck.

You shouldn’t expect five star accommodation but it is comfortable and cosy and bungalows and cottages are just steps away from the ocean. There is no shop or restaurant on the island so food and drinks need to be brought over with you. Alternatively, you can pre-order meals with Waterline Restaurant and bring them over with you on the ferry.

Doing nothing is advocated here and you will not feel guilty doing so. Pumpkin island is the perfect place for rest and relaxation but if you want to be active, there are many activities available just steps off the beach.

Swimming and Beach lounging rank highly here in the hammocks that line the golden palm tree beaches. This island offers perfect sheltered bays for swimming all year round. The clear waters and gentle sloping beaches make it ideal for snorkelers also.

For more adrenaline filled activities, Scuba diving and Jet Ski Tours can be organised for pickup from Pumpkin Island.

Pumpkin Island is a popular activity either from the shoreline or you can hire a dinghy to explore other areas. Many people then return to the island and proudly eat their catch for dinner. Oyster shucking along the rocks and nature walks and bird watching are also an enjoyable ways to pass the time. The island also has complimentary paddle boats, sea kayaks and stand up paddle boards for resort guests.

To reach Pumpkin Island guests can take a 45 minute ferry transfer from Yeppoon on Monday, Friday and Sunday. The nearest airport servicing Yeppoon is Rockhampton or you reach the area on long distance rail or coach services. For drivers, Yeppoon is 650 km north of Brisbane or 1100 km south of Cairns.
